He's known, of course. There was no way he couldn't. He'd realized something must be wrong with him at Serpentberry's occasional look. Thornkit's question of whether he was Loonstar's son or not twisted something inside him Hollykit hadn't been able to explain, then. But as he watched Asterpaw and Dreampaw interact with their...his(?) mother, he began to see what Thornkit had been getting at.

He looked nothing like Loonstar or his older siblings. In fact he hardly looked like any cat in the clan, really. Maybe if he squinted he looked like Dewshine, a little. What did that make him? He must have family somewhere? And if so where were they if not in Thunderclan?

"Ma, I have a question." Hollykit announces himself, stepping into their den with paws still too big for him. The boy frowns up at her. "...do I have a family? I-I know you and Dreampaw and Asterpaw are, of course..."

He finds himself looking at his paws, suddenly uncertain about whether to prod about this. What if he was making a big deal about nothing? Maybe he was just the spitting image of his father who he'd never met..? That could be it. "But I have other family, don't I..? Did they go away somewhere, or..?"

The image of Serpentberry, cold and covered in flowers as dirt covers her springs to mind and he shakes his head so hard his ears thwap the sides of his head. He can't bring himself to voice the thought. Death is still a bit of a foreign concept to him but still he knows he doesn't like it. Doesn't like how it makes those around him feel. Doesn't like the scent of lavender and the tightness of his clanmate's throats as they speak of those who passed.

"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
what time had been spent idly combing through the knots in her tail are interrupted by the small voice of her son- a misty cloud that floated so sweetly through camp. her gaze sets on him with a softness few can be afforded, ears sitting at alert to make sure he understood all of her attention belonged to him in this moment. he'd already grown so much since he'd been found... it wouldn't be long before he'd be running through the wilderness with the rest of them. just in time to learn to fend for himself as the weather got too cold to compete with.

still, the question catches her off guard, prepared as she was to answer it but still fearful for how the revelation might be taken. not her flesh, not her blood, but still decidedly hers. "Of course we're your family," she agrees, but doesn't flinch at the implication (the truth). "But... you're right... as much as we adore you, you have kin outside of just us..." she had no doubt Asterpaw held space in his heart for his younger brother, that Dreampaw tried to keep the string between them strong even when she was away. did Magpiepaw even... know? did he even care?

suddenly she feels nauseous.

"It's alright to want answers- I just... don't have many for you. I don't know where your parents are. We found you late at night under the Great Oaks... you and four litter-mates... in neutral territory, no mother or father in sight. No scent of them..." she still could not fathom how they just seemed to spawn into being right there... no sign of struggle... no clues. "One to each clan. Your reach is far- I have implored the other clans to be honest with your siblings but... they're cowards." they are selfish.

"When you are old enough, I will point them out to you if I recognize them on patrols... you deserve to know." and so do they.

He can't believe his ears, or doesn't want to believe that what he's just heard from his mother's mouth. They are not family. Not in the way Asterpaw and Loonstar are. Not in the way he wants. His own birth parents seemingly had not even wanted him and his siblings. "...Oh."

It's all Hollykit can bring himself to say at first. Blue eyes staring at something at the back of the den wall rather than at his...mother properly. A part of him wants to turn tail and run out into camp, the other to fling himself at Loonstar and bury himself in the comfort of her warmth. Instead he found himself frozen in place. "Why couldn't we all have come to Thunderclan? Why did we have to be separated like this?" He bites his lip to keep it from wobbling, squeezes his eyes shut for a brief moment before opening them.

He knows why. He does. All he ever hears the adults talk about is leafbare. Leafbare this. Leafbare that. What about his siblings? What about his feelings? Was the threat of leafbare really so great that it warranted separating a family? To potentially never know who they were? What right did the other clans have to tear them apart like this?

The offer is nearly missed, lost in thought as he was but still Hollykit catches it. He nods, hesistantly stepping forward. "...I want to meet them, Ma." Shoving his forehead against her shoulder before curling up beside her. Soon, he'll be too big for this. Soon, he will be an apprentice and be able to see his siblings. His REAL siblings. Hopefully.

"They should know, too..." Know what they'd lost. What they'd never even had a chance to have...
