The riverside is a delight for Grizzlypaw during the day, a gentle breeze calms the sunlight that bears against his fur. It's hard to keep himself focused when his fur gets so itchy in the warm air, but he will prove to Hazelheart that he's a capable apprentice! No storm guard would see him as a let down, even if he still struggled in some lessons.

Grizzlypaw snuck away from the dusk patrol in favor of following the trail of a vole, wanting to surprise his mentor with a successful hunt, when he became distracted by what he saw. The stones looked beautiful in the dim moonlight. The sky hung between sunset and moonrise, painting the glittering water in oranges and purples. "Huh, wooaaahh." Grizzlypaw clambered over the sunning stones to get closer to the river, hanging far over the edge of the bank his jaw nearly met the surface.

A trail of water-lapped rocks dot across the river. His curiosity is a force to reckon with, he's confident he can balance on those rocks with ease! So he leapt from the bankside without warning or preparation, spectacularly falling short to reach the first stone and dunking his head under the water while his back legs tried to quickly fix his error, sinking his claws into damp soil so he wasn't tugged off by the current.

Grizzlypaw struggled, forelimbs flailing to find footing that wouldn't arrive, keeping his head submerged while he fought the weight of water. He should have thought this through far more, he realized, as the shocking cold river started to tunnel his vision.

The sun dippled low, casting a soft glow across the river and the smooth stones that jutted out from the water's edge. Long legs carried the tom forward as he led the patrol along the river. One last sweep before they all returned home for the night. Adderfang was eager to return home. Just imagining the excitement on Crescent and Rushpaw's faces… and the warmth of Wavesong as she greeted him was enough to dust the days exhaustion off his bones.

As he moved up from the falls, the boom of water filling his ears. He didn't hear the splashing—swallowed up by the cascading river. But he did notice something flailing against the bank. Hanging off the edge, dipping below the surface. He can barely make out the brown of their pelt. The river has them, and it won't be long before they get swept up and dragged over the falls. "In the water!" He says curtly to his patrol, the urgency bleeding into his tone. "Hang on!" Adderfang barks sharply.

He races along the river, muscles coiling as he trapeses the stones with practiced paws onto the opposite side of the river. Adderfang rushes to the edge of the water and cranes over them, dipping his head into the river. Teeth grasping at their scruff before yanking up with all his upper strength, trying to wrestle them from the current.

Dusk was both Wildfirelullaby's favorite and least favorite time of the day, much of the prey on similar schedule to the cats of the clan and heading back to their own nests for the night which made it difficult to hunt for a lot of the prey that lived within the territory that he was still getting used to. On the other paw, however, it meant that he was surrounded in more silence than usual, the main sounds surrounding him the quiet chirping of crickets, of the wind blowing through the leaves of the forest. Nose rose to the sky for a moment as jaws parted, not yet noticing the missing cat from the patrol - Grizzlypaw wasn't his apprentice, he wasn't tasked with keeping his eyes on the other, simply with helping to feed the mouths of those left back at camp - until the soft sounds of water lapping at the rocks on the shore of the border towards RiverClan grew louder, followed by awe before a splash and the sound of a struggle.

It didn't take him long at all before the warrior was on the scene, ignoring the fact a stranger was on ThunderClan's land before he, too, was reaching forward to reach for the familiar pelt of the apprentice aiming too to grab onto whatever he could to try and help Adderfang pull Grizzlypaw up, before quickly letting go as soon as the younger feline was up and above the water, safely - fully - on dry land once more. "Are ya wanting to meet dead cats?" He'd speak out, voice strained but hopefully clear it was joking - at least a small bit.

COPPER OF THUNDERCLAN

A twitch of the ear was all it took, Copperstorm stilled, golden eyes narrowing. There was noise near the border. A commotion. The kind that raised fur and set instincts on edge. His hackles lifted as he turned sharply toward the sound, paws moving without hesitation now. First cautious, then quicker, until he was running. Voices, an unfamiliar one... It cut through the distant splashing of water. They didn't sound hostile, but his muscles remained taut with unease. Someone had fallen in. That much was clear.

When he reached the scene, he skidded to a halt, breath sharp in his chest. His gaze swept over the the stranger, an outsider by scent, not immediately threatening and then dropped to the sodden bundle of fur between them. Grizzlypaw. Relief and alarm tangled in his gut. Wildfirelullaby was already there, which soothed him somewhat, but seeing the apprentice soaked and trembling on the riverbank clawed at his nerves. His tail lashed once before settling. He stepped forward, casting a quick glance over Grizzlypaw to assess injuries. His ears flicked back against his skull, dampened by adrenaline and the tension in the air.

Was he part of the dusk patrol? Copperstorm couldn't recall. He hadn't been with them, he'd gone off on his own patrol, circling the outer edges for signs of danger. Apparently, not far enough. His gaze lifted, locking onto the strangers. For a heartbeat, his stare was sharp, measuring, but then it softened just slightly, and he dipped his head. " Thank you. " he said, voice gravel-low but sincere. " For your help. "

The sound of the river is as if everything filled his ears at once. Roaring and racing, bubbling and tumbling from the current. He can hear, feel, the weight of his struggle to keep his back paws stable and just as the dirt loosened enough for him to take on the entire river, teeth sink in.

Grizzlypaw felt his heart stop. Instability on all four paws led quickly into panic, but he didn't have the time to react or even thrash as the RiverClanners took charge. Adderfang and Wildfirelullaby reared him back onto sturdier, drier ground. The chocolate rosette is fine, as one can physically be, but the chimera's questions are only answered with water-dipped coughs for a moment. The air fought to break into his lungs, Grizzlypaw couldn't tell if he was suffocating or breathing as the tension tightened around his chest like icicles.

"You... How...?" He sputtered until there were no droplets trying to escape from his throat anymore, and now only his limbs swayed from the exhaustion. He swung back to sit on his tail, taking in a deep breath. "You swim in that? Like... by choice?" Grizzlypaw leaned into Copperstorm as the dizziness waved in and out from behind his eyes. "Would I have died if I let go? If you weren't there?"

(🜲) dusk carries with it all the warm scents of the day, and the storm guard lets them roll off of her tongue as she strides along the border. a soft yawn stretches her jaws, a quick glance down at her enthused apprentice tells her all is right. minutes later, she glances down again and the chocolate boy is nowhere to be seen. panic surges through her, alarm bells ringing as in the distance a splash is heard. "shit!" she'll growl, muscles rippling as she urges her body forth towards the sunningrocks after wildfirelullaby. she arrives too late to witness the drowning apprentice, only to see him dragged to shore by a disgruntled looking riverclan cat. scrambling down the bank, the worried mentor bends to sniff her apprentice.

"are you ok? hurt at all?" she asks of him, scanning his earthen form for scratches as he leans against copperstorm. satisfied in grizzlypaw's safety, and turns onto the riverclanner. "thank you," she dips her head to adderfang. "have you learned now not to go near the river without another cat, kid?" she asks her apprentice, raising an eyebrow. "give your thanks to this riverclanner. he won't always be here to save you." her tone is hard, enforcing a teaching moment, but her eyes are softer, thankful that the 'paw is still here at all.

a stocky, medium-haired brown tabby with hazel eyes. this is a large cat with a rippling musculature. hazel's frame is wide and tall, shoulders broad, muzzle and eyes heavy in her skull. chestnut and chocolate fur swirl across her pelt, sliced through with tabby stripes of shadow. her eyes invoke images of a sweet summer's day, honey and brown mingling into a soft amber gold

It isn't long before others join him—likely the patrol the scrap wandered off from. Adderfang doesn't spare them a glance at first, too focused on dragging the sodden lump of fur back from the river. Once the current releases its grip, he gives a sharp jerk of his head and lets go of the scruff.

The boy sputters violently, hacking up a portion of the river. Adderfang watches in silence, amber eyes narrowed. Then he gives a sharp shake of his muzzle, tongue flicking out to swipe a few cold droplets from his muzzle.

He does not honor the first few questions with an answer. "Possibly. If the current pulled you out." His gaze cuts to the older cats crowding in. "The river doesn't discriminate between old and young. Know it has dragged better swimmers under." A warning they all ought to remember.

Utterings of thanks and the like are met with a grunt. "Keep a better eye on your apprentices." The paw could've drowned, but that much they already knew. They were lucky, but next time, any negligence might not go unpunished.

The lifeguard is not one to overstay his welcome. Besides, there is work still to be done before they can head back to camp. Adderfang glances down at the apprentice a final time and turns, long tail swishing behind him. He picks his way across the slick rocks, before leaping onto the far side of the border. A flick of his tail beckons any stragglers of theirs that tried to assist back over.

Hazelheart arrived not long after, just as Grizzlypaw continued rambling on about how RiverClanners actually swam in that murky mess. Copperstorm let out a quiet snort, amusement flickering beneath his usual stoicism, before releasing a soft sigh and turning to his Clanmate. " He's alive. " he confirmed to Hazelheart, dipping his head with calm assurance. " Wildfirelullaby and… " His gaze shifted briefly to the unfamiliar tom, Adderfang, though the name escaped him. A small frown furrowed his brow before he looked back to Hazelheart, catching her as she launched into a firm scolding of Grizzlypaw.

Good. The apprentice needed to hear it.

" Thanks for the warning. " Copperstorm added with a flick of his thick tail toward the departing RiverClanner, tone polite but watchful. " We'll heed it well. " He watched the stranger go with a quiet curiosity in his golden eyes, then turned his attention back to the dripping, still-too-eager apprentice in front of him. Copperstorm lowered his head slightly, voice dry with a faint curl of humor at the edge. " Next time you need a bath, try not to pick the river. " he quipped, offering Grizzlypaw the faintest of grins before patting his shoulder with a heavy paw.

" Come on. " he said more gently, voice low with that quiet warmth reserved for the ones he watched over. " Let's get you back to camp. Get you dried up before you catch a chill. "
