SOMETHING SACRED
HIDES IN EVERY DROP OF DEW

Border patrols were daunting things, apprehensive of cats' reactions, especially after the fiasco with Riverclan? Stars, she would never want a repeat of that. But, then again, Skyclan seemed rather reasonable! Her patrol, on the other hand...

Flamerunner was good company, but not always the most serious. Belladonadance was kind enough, though Stoatstream had not spent all too much time with her. Jadethorn and three of her too young kits-turned-apprentices being touted about and Crowpaw, who had just gotten into a fight with another cat on their border! Frankly, she had dreaded the patrol ever since she was assigned it. The young warrior tried to ask everyone to at least be polite, but it felt like a losing battle, knowing she was outnumbered by unreasonable cats. Why she, out of all of them, was to lead, out-ranked by Jadethorn herself, felt like she was being taunted.

Nonetheless, the patrol continued to Skyclan, the weather growing colder and colder on the approach to the tree-residing cats. The very earth itself was coated in the first leafbare snow, just her luck to have opted on that day to bring her apprentice on his first border patrol in the fallen snow. But these apprentices needed to learn to traverse the snow--as did she. She was only a pawful of moons old in the last leafbare, and her father vehemently refused to allow her in the snow.

But just as the snow settled underpaw, she realised as they approached the towering trees of Skyclan, it had settled precariously on the branches above. Her expression knitted in discomfort as she spoke up. "While the snow underpaw is shallow, the snow is undisturbed in the trees overhead." She flickered her tail to motion overhead. "I believe the first patrol has yet to disturb the branches, so we may run into other cats or falling snow. Watch your pawsteps and keep your eyes out for disturbed snow piles above." It was simple instructions, really, but knowing how some of her patrol could be, she wouldn't be surprised if they would be returning home with someone dithering in the cold from tempting fates.

Instead, she looked to her apprentice, smiling. "Skyclan cats can be harsh, but they're a proud clan as we are, defensive of their borders. So be polite, and we shall be given the same courtesy."'Hopefully.' While tensions were high, she wanted to teach respect, not fear. Hatred was often unfounded, and cruelty towards clans as a whole was often unneeded; not every cat was guilty of a handful of actions. So while Cougarpaw was still learning, he would be a new slate to show all clans were deserving of respect, even if clanmates had other opinions.

Amethystpaw followed after her mentor and Stoatstream towards the border. Something in his heart told him to laugh, to play, but he pushed those feelings down, burying them deep inside; the only thing betraying him was the playful glint in his copper eye. The dark apprentice followed silently, accompanied by his friend Crowpaw and those apprentices, too young to be called anything other than kits.

The ground beneath his paws soon turned...white? Wet and cold. Amethystpaw was just about to ask what is that? when Stoatstream commented on the snow. So this is what snow looks like? The apprentice felt curiosity rising up inside of him, he had so many questions he wanted to ask, but fought the urge at the look of his mentor. Instead, he bit his tongue and asked only one. "Does it ever snow in ShadowClan too?"

Amethystpaw nodded at Stoatstream's words - he would be polite and nice. There was no reason to be rude, SkyClan was just another clan, just like them, no? He kept his mouth shut, looking around himself on the unfamiliar and strange surrounding, taking note of where the border was and where he should not set his paws anymore.

CROWPAW | SHADOWCLAN
"WHEN ALL THE HATE BURNS OFF, I'M LEFT HERE WITH THE PAIN"

.

Crowpaw follows silently behind Belladonnadance, ears pinned back. They've learned the hard way that they should keep their less savory thoughts to themself - and they do, for now at least - but what a joke. Two kittens trailing along with the rest of them, not ready for the harsh leaf-bare snow that hangs overhead... it's of course not the kitten's faults that they're here, it's Sablestar's. Crowpaw finds more and more that they don't like the way that he does things.

His tail flicks in acknowledgement of Stoatstream's words, and he can't help but feel like they're mostly directed at him. "Yeah, yeah, I'm not gonna bite anybody this time." He tries to joke, but the delivery falls flat.
Crowpaw has heard of snow, but this is the first time he's ever walked in it, and he doesn't like how wet it is. Silvery eyes glance to Amethystpaw as he voices his curiosity, and Crowpaw can't help but also want an answer to the question. "I hope not, personally. My paws are freezing." He can't imagine having to walk through this all the time - how do the other Clans find it bearable?

PENNED BY PLOT

Quailstep shook the snow from her pelt as she padded through the pines and towards the FourTrees border, chasing the scent of prey towards the Gathering place. The birds had been active during the snowfall, leading to plenty of prey, but the difficulty of hunting in the frigid cold was still a hindrance. Especially with her dark pelt - it was far easier to hunt in leaf-fall, when her patterns blended in with fallen leaves and tree bark.

Nevertheless, she'd been relatively successful today, burying her prey back in the pines for collection later. As FourTrees came into view, so did the patrol from the other Clan and the precarious piles of snow on the branches above them. The sun guard didn't have the highest opinion of ShadowClan, but as long as they stayed polite and on their side of the border...

Her head lifted as she approached, giving the head of their patrol a quick nod of acknowledgement. For now, she'd simply wait to see what the other Clan did.
OOC: Apprentice tag @Mallowpaw if you wanna come along! Quailstep would have warned them to not engage with shadowclan unless she says so lol

There's only two types of people in the world

The ones that entertain, and the ones that observe

Jadethorn could feel the questioning looks of her decision. Of why she wasn't leading this patrol herself or why her young ones were even apprenticed in the first place. It had only been a few days since the meeting and she had heard whispers and complaints. It was nothing she wasn't used to, however. Ever since Sablestar had named her one of the council, she had dealt with those looks. Still, it was like water off her back at this point. As long as they followed her orders, she could care less of how they felt. Muddied paws stepped lightly as they left the rain addled pocosin, green gaze watching every step her children took as they left their home territory and moved into unknown land.

Then, there was her own apprentice. Amethystpaw. Why Sable had given her this kit was beyond her. It still irked her to not train one of her own. It was why she placed herself on this patrol. To see how the two warriors handled the younger apprentices. The movement from wet ground, to cold, solid earth, to freezing snow was a welcome one to the older molly. Once they stepped onto the whiteness, the night guard took the chance to wipe away the mud and clean between her claws with a swipe or two through the softness. The voice following behind her asked a question and Jadethorn looked back at her apprentice. A simple shake of the head before she kept moving behind Stoatstream. "No, but I wish it did. It's better than slopping through mud all day and night, even if it is cold to the touch."

As they arrived at the border, the night guard stared upwards. The trees here were...tall. Taller than any she had seen when visiting Thunderclan or sneaking into Riverclan's land. It was no wonder their leader liked to act so high and mighty. Maybe all the climbing had gone to their head. She remembered it perfectly. The point staking claim to the boulder of fourtrees, hovering over the other leaders with accusations too grand to uphold. Why Juniper had even even given the 'king' the satisfaction of a life was beyond her understanding. But, of course, she had always been to soft for her own good. Even back in the colony days...

When Stoatstream mentioned to Cougarpaw to be polite, she couldn't help the scoff that escaped her muzzle, pawsteps made to step closer towards the border. "Remember that they've injured one of our own, Stoat. Lost an ear to them. Never trust others to play by our rules." A paw was lofted before being dragged through the soft snow, making a visible line in front of herself. Her eyes glanced back to her own apprentice and she motioned for the young one to come forward as she spoke. "Fresh snow can muddle borders, and with everything covered in white, they can be hard to see. Always be mindful of your surroundings or else some cat will use it to their advantage."

It was then that movement caught her toxic gaze. A tabby pelt was easy to spot amongst the white, snow being disturbed with each step. Ah, so they would not have to wait long before their little lessons were cut short. Jadethorn knew it was not smart to speak ill of others in their presence. No words were spoken by the silent watcher and the night guard simply gave a nod back, expression neutral, even as her tail tip twitched in aggitation. She once again looked upward, watching as wind blew some flakes off the branches and carried them to the ground further away. "Do you ever get buried during a hunt? Maybe you could even use it in your favor." A simple question. As much as she didn't want to interact with the incoming patrol, it would be wise to learn some things before their thieves would sneak into unknown lands later on.

" I don't see why things should go wrong, right? " the flame-point chimed brightly as he padded along beside Stoatstream. " Respect where respect is given! No need for snarky remarks or unsheathed claws. " he spoke, winking toward Jadethorn with a huge grin. Then he cleared his throat and glanced back, blue eyes immediately finding his apprentice. Silverki-- Uh... Silverpaw. His ear twitched as he lingered on them for a heartbeat before offering an encouraging grin.

Stars, they still looked so small.

Since the clan tensions had flared, blood seemed to spill faster than words. Borders were sharper now, teeth bared more often than not. Harmony felt like an old story passed down by elders who barely believed it themselves anymore. Flamerunner slowed just enough to keep Silverpaw within easy sight. He didn't care whose kit they were, grumpy parents, absent ones, whatever it was. He wasn't letting anything happen to them. His thoughts brushed Wolfpack for just a moment, ears flicking back as a quiet sigh escaped him before he straightened again.

" Anyway! Yes. " he continued lightly, lifting his voice. " Watch for falling snow. You really don't want to end up in a heap underneath it. Very undignified. " A soft snicker followed as his gaze lifted, spotting a SkyClanner further ahead. After a brief pause, he flashed them a wide, friendly grin. " Well hello there! Enjoying the crisp, chilly breath of leafbare? " he called. " How're those frozen paws holding up... " He tilted his head, tail-tip flicking thoughtfully.

" ... And be honest, do SkyClan cats actually feel the cold, or do you all just pretend you're immune to it for dramatic effect? " he asked with a flicker of mischief in his icy blues, a smile to his face.

Belladonnadance's tail gently touched her apprentice. Her and Crowpaw had grown closer during his stay in the medicine cat den, while she was still a guarded molly herself, she could feel a sense of kinship with the young cat. They had both lost everything, but now they had each other. It was almost like a divine joke by the universe. Belladonnadance had been assigned to this patrol alongside Stoatstream, a molly she did not know very well, but she had seen her working hard with that foundling Saffronkit. It was admirable. Then there was Flamerunner, he irked her, though she would never tell him that. Reminded her far too much of that haughty tom that wanted to take her as his bride, the same that left her with her scars to remember him by. And then... Jadethorn. Jadethorn terrified Belladonnadance. She was loud, smart, and not afraid to say what she thought. It was everything Belladonna wished she could be, though in a way, that want presented as a feeling of unease. Along with them was of course her own apprentice, Crowpaw as well as three of Jadethorn's children that had been recently apprenticed and the young Amethystpaw.

Belladonna never went out of her way to visit the nursery, she was hardly familiar with the lot of them. Though, they were just wee kits. Still, her priority here was Crowpaw. She chuckled at her apprentice's remark of freezing paws.

"Watch above ya' too, kiddo. If ya' ain't careful you might getta' headful of snow too." She chuckled to herself. It was clear for most that were familiar with the molly that having an apprentice had allowed her to open up a bit, she talked much more than she used to. She tipped her head to the Skyclan molly that had approached, she was mighty pretty. Still, she was on an opposing side, and Belladonna had to be ready if things went south.

Mallowpaw followed behind Quailstep, practically vibrating. After their last border meeting with Riverclan, they had gotten quite the lecture about how to properly talk to people. Mallow didn't really understand what he had done wrong, he had just asked a question. Still, he didn't want to upset Quailstep so he obeyed her wish to only engage with Shadowclan if she said it was alright. He let out an exaggerated sigh, whispering (or... attempting to whisper, it was really more of a loud stage whisper) to his mentor.

"Puhleaaase can I talk to their apprentices? I won't say anything weird! I promise!" He was practically begging, sticking close to his mentor but desperate to talk to the cats that had wandered close to their border. There was so many apprentices across the border, just waiting for it to be their friend! He could count four! Every single warrior on this patrol was flanked by an apprentice, Three of them looked a little small, but maybe they were just little! He knew he probably not supposed to say that out loud, or he might get that weird look from Quailstep again.
