SABLESTAR
he/him
sixty-three moons
shadowclan leader

PENNED BY gonkpilled

Tension rippled beneath the tom's fur like static rubbed between every fiber and hair on his pelt. His tail lashed like the missing lightning crackle within the thundering overhead. The rain pattered over the pocosin's camp in rolling waves that formed wide but shallow puddles in the mud. The clouds choked any of the light from the waxing moon and the outline of the tom's pelt looked more misty than real, as if a ghost stood in his place. With Cicadabuzz still hardly responsive in Magpiepaw's care, and the strength in his council growing slim, Sablestare felt too shaky on these grounds.

Wolfpack had not been seen since the night before and Sablestar had not cared to answer any question nor concern regarding him, practically flippant. Off making a mockery of me. Of my kindness. The thought came tasting bitter. Leave it to Wolfpack to let his children starve, Sablestar would not see it come true. They would grow, quickly, under his care and sprout from little weedlings and into a force born and bled by the pocosin. They would not starve when they can hunt, just as he and Gray had to survive.

"ShadowClan, I come to you bearing unfortunate news." He spoke hoarsely as if there were no air in his lungs. "Cicadabuzz's talents as a medicine cat are... unavailable to us. While bug rests in their den, Magpiepaw is working tirelessly to bring them back to full strength. It is..." Sablestar swallowed dryly, his lips twisting into a grimace. "There is only hope that Cicadabuzz comes back to us, as they were before." If at all, but those words do not dare utter from him, not in his voice.

But suddenly the tuxedo's head snaps upward, and the ferocity in his eyes are ablaze again. "And as for our deputy- he is hardly to be considered as such. For Wolfpack's glaring failures to feed our Clan, to keep your bellies fed, his rank has been stripped away. He's left us! Abandoned our home in his shame, like a coward." A pitched shrill echoed in his accusation while he spat to defame Wolfpack. It may have not been like the hulking tom in recent days to cast his shadow over ShadowClan, not after all the blood spilled for it. But Sablestar's words were cut with a silver tongue, he would favor no other truth than what he spoke.

"I will not see that we starve, however. We will do whatever it takes... Our new apprentices will be painted in their efforts to earn their keep. They are weaned, chewing more than simple morsels, a few moons short should not matter. Step forward, please." His gaze snapped to the attention of the nursery, where Jadethorn had primed her gems in preparation. It was on her blessing, after all.

"Amberkit will not stand beside you while in the medicine den. Train even harder for her sake and hope that while she recovers with a full belly it will bring her closer to joining you." Another endless task for his son to manage without Cicadabuzz... but they must have faith. "Cougarkit, your training will be entrusted to Stoatstream. She has trained at my side near every waking moment, has seen the lands of our home through my eyes and I gladly extend the same opportunity to you." Her night-time activities had not halted past their training, either, and the more he found Cougarkit wandering camp at night, the more he felt right in his decision.

"Silentkit, you will be in the paws of Fleafire. Trained by your mother, she has faced the same path as you do now. Confronting the forest in your smaller moons, I trust she will learn from her journey in apprenticeship to give you only the best." Sablestar regarded Fleafire sharply, his trust in her not to tug the leash only giving way slightly. He had been wrong with her before, he would hope his instinct was wrong again.

"Ghostkit, Bluegale will be in charge of your training. He has been part of this Clan since it was merely an idea, a wish. May the skills he gave to Websight also pass on to you." It had been some time since Bluegale had another apprentice. Hollowmist had doubled up, Halfshade took on Dreampaw's training, it was his time to shine with another sparkling gem of opportunity. Just two left of the litter to pair with a warrior, Sablestar felt like his voice had stretched on for far too long.

"Obsidiankit, your mentor will be Tigerswoop, she is wise as she is talented. I trust her skills from beyond our forest serve you well." A boy who pattered much in his father's shadow, a shame neither were here to grant him mentorship too... Sablestar's ear twitched as he thought of Wolfpack again. Brooding somewhere in his loneliness and Coalstrike...

"Silverkit, for your training I would like to see Flamerunner oversee it." For all the tension and discipline between him and the former deputy, Sablestar would like to see it for himself what Flamerunner could do under pressure. He could roll and expose his belly as Possumgrin had, or soar into success with Jadethorn. "I will be watching you two closely."

There is one more in the nursery, one sturdier than these kits. One with muscle replacing the kitten fat as his sixth moon crawled forward. Sablestar had decided his mentor the moment it was decided the younger of his denmates would be graduating with him. "Amethystkit, it is your day, too." A sudden softness crept in as he motioned the kit forward. "I have thought long for what mentor you need, you are the oldest of your denmates after all. You deserve a stronger paw to fit your capabilities, which is why I've given Jadethorn the pleasure of training you." The raspy crackle of his usual tone returned as the guards name uttered from his mouth. He took a step away from the kittens, done with their ceremonies and ready to move on. Enough time was given in his pause for them to follow in their mentors steps if they wished.

"In light of our ranks unfortunate fall there are needs to be met. This Clan must stand on sturdy ground, and so I ask that Mirepurr and Bluegale join me as my Night Guards. They have served this Clan since it's dawn, and have been at my side even in the times before. I trust they will not disappoint you." It does not seem like an invitation but more as a demand the more he spoke. They had no choice in his eyes, he needed them. They must server their Clan as he saw fit.
OOC: hello everyone happy meeting! we've got quite a bit to go over

to start, cicadabuzz currently is far too injured to continue its duties as shadowclans medicine cat. due to this, sablestar is establishing that magpiepaw will be their sole healer. tully will not be returning to their role, but it promises cicada's story isnt over!! pls give tully a huge THANK YOU in their channel #tullys-tavern for the amazing year of cicadabuzz!!

dizzy is also taking a break from the hp team with wolfpack as things are currently very busy irl. as it stands, wolfpack has left shadowclan after an argument led to sable hastily demoting him, but he is not exiled! i am so grateful for all of dizzys efforts and creativity for shadowclan, they were the brains behind our haunting event back in february! im going to miss such a core part of the team, and i hope they are able to come back soon!! currently i am not looking for a new deputy to fill in the spot, but if something develops within writing i may pursue it :D

to help fill in some of the space left, we have TWO NEW GUARDS!! please welcome carat's @bluegale and karmens @MIREPURR to our ranks!! im so excited for them

AND OUR MANY PROMOTIONS. jadethorn's kits are apprentices at four months old! WHAT!
@obsidiankit -> tigerswoop (NPC)
@COUGARKIT -> @Stoatstream
@silentkit -> @FLEAFIRE
@Ghostkit -> @bluegale
@Silverkit -> @Flamerunner
@Amethystkit -> @Jadethorn

thank you again, and expect patrols up very soon!

That's the price you pay
Leave behind your heart and cast away
Just another product of today
Rather be the hunter than the prey
And you're standing on the edge, face up

.

From the shadows at the edge of camp, Coalstrike watched. Even in death, his massive form blended with the darkness, his amber eyes glowing like embers in the rain. He observed the mud, the puddles, and the movements of ShadowClan cats, and a quiet, burning fury simmered within him. Wolfpack had abandoned them. The deputy was gone, leaving the Clan to struggle without guidance. Cicadabuzz, their medicine cat, the one who should have kept the Clan strong, was barely functioning under Magpiepaw's care after the attack. Weak. Useless. Broken. Coalstrike's claws itched even here, the desire to rip through failure roaring in his chest.

And Sablestar... The leader. Even he seemed tired, his strength stretched thin as he tried to hold the Clan together. Coalstrike allowed himself a brief, grudging flicker of worry. The leader had always been strong, but this night... The strain showed. ' Keep yourself steady, Sablestar. ' he thought, almost silently. ' Do not falter. It will do none good. Press forward with bared teeth and claws... Rise above. '

And the kits... Damn it all, his blood, Wolfpack's seed, Jadethorn's brood... They were only four moons old and already named apprentices. Too young. Too untested. They didn't yet understand the dangers of the marsh, the weight of ShadowClan life, the harshness he had forged them to survive. He saw their wide eyes and tentative steps and a low, bitter laugh rumbled through him. But they were also HIS kits... And if anything he pressed onto them. It was STRENGTH. Endurance. Survival.

ShadowClan was supposed to be strong. Unbeatable. And yet, it was fraying. A deputy gone, a medicine cat nearly lost, apprentices unready. Coalstrike, ever the shadow, felt fury and despair churn inside him. He stayed hidden, silent, letting a low rumble vibrate through the mud and trees. Every flick of his torn ear, every twitch of his tail, every narrowing of his eyes spoke judgment. ' You think this Clan will survive like this? No. Keep your head in it Sable... Even if your paws tremble under the weight. ' the thought hissed in his mind. ' You will learn. You will grow. And I will be here... In the shadows to watch. ' He lingered, unseen, simmering with disappointment and rage.

Even in death, ShadowClan would not falter while he watched. Not if he could help it.

REPAY ME IN KIND

The news cannot be not good. Bluegale wonders if it might ever be good again. Sablestar helms this meeting like any other, yet he can see from the rigidness in the leader that he is taking the stress and starvation of his clan far more seriously. The warrior chews the inside of his cheek as he watches the way the tuxedo tomcat lashes his tail to and fro, and he finds comfort among the crowd when he places himself near to cats like Hollowmist and Mirepurr. Despite his loud mouth, Bluegale is not the roughest of ShadowClan's warriors; he finds comfort in those who keep close and follow with loyalty rather than brawn. Family, he thinks, matters as much to him as it does to Sablestar.

Bluegale's eyes widen as Sablestar begins. Cicadabuzz is horribly hurt, leaving Sablestar's child-son to heal an entire clan. Magpiepaw is surely prepared- at least somewhat- for the task under Cicadabuzz's former visage, but he is still young. And Wolfpack... Bluegale's ears flatten and he lets out a hiss. He turns to the nearby form of @Hollowmist and murmurs wretchedly "A traitor... And now we have an entire litter of fatherless kits. Who do you think Sablestar will put up in Wolfpack's stead...?" His gossip is cut short though as Sablestar calls his name. Bluegale snaps his eyes toward the brother figure he regards now as leader, and blinks when he realizes Ghostkit has been assigned to him. "Great," he murmurs flatly so that only his sibling can hear "I'd better not have Jadethorn jamming her paws into my business." But nonetheless he straightens up and gestures for Ghostpaw to join him in the crowd.

The blue and white tomcat shakes his head. At least there will be more paws to help feed their starving clan. At least, he thinks bitterly, the pocosin doesn't fill with snow and slush in the leaf-bare months from what he can remember. It seems like it has been so long since ShadowClan has faced winter. Bluegale is pulled from his miserable reverie as Sablestar speaks his name once again, but this time it is with the command that he and Mirepurr join his council. Bluegale blinks with surprise, turns to Hollowmist, and then tries to find Mirepurr's eyes in the crowd as well. Had he heard correctly? Bluegale finds that he is so unlike the other cats that Sablestar had put up- except for Mothbite maybe- not to mention Mirepurr's mild nature, too.

"Thank you Sablestar," he finds his voice after a long moment of stupid disbelief "I won't let you down."

Amethystkit stood alert, with his coat freshly groomed and fluffed out, to look as representable as possible - today was the big day! Today he was to become an apprentice.

His spirits faltered a bit as the leader spoke, of struggles that were and struggles to come - so many important changes. The healer and deputy ranks both unfilled now, though Amethystkit did not truly understand their importance that much anyway - there was the council and there was Magpiepaw still.

And then it was his turn! Amethystkit stood up excitedly for his name to be called, ears angled straight and chin raised high. Only for Sablestar to call for Cougarkit... Cougarkit? Cougarkit was only 4 moons old! The dark kitten felt confused and lost as one by one, the leader called on every one of the younger litter, safe for Amberkit. Why were they being called and not him? He felt annoyance followed by anger rising up inside of him, eyes staring daggers into the younger kittens...- apprentices.

His anger finally cooled down as Sablestar met his own gaze, at last calling his name - phew - and assigned him a mentor. Jadethorn. A fine choice, if he said so himself. He looked for the cat's eyes in the crowd, nodding and smiling. The dark, newly named apprentice found himself purring as he dipped his head, both towards the leader and his new mentor. And yet... he couldn't help but feel a little jealousy, a little resentment towards the younger apprentices - he could have been an apprentice this early too!

Amethystpaw understood, of course, it was because of the hunger. When he was four moons old, the prey had only began to grow scarce and there was no need to fill their ranks with fresh paws. Still... there was an annoyance resting against his heart, reflected in his amethyst-colored eye.

CROWPAW | SHADOWCLAN
"WHEN ALL THE HATE BURNS OFF, I'M LEFT HERE WITH THE PAIN"

.

Crowpaw is fresh out of the medicine den - if it weren't for the sheer coincidence that they'd been cleared to leave today, they would have insisted upon it after seeing the state that Cicadabuzz is in. Magpiepaw will certainly have his paws full tending to his mentor, and Crowpaw had already caused enough trouble as it is. There's no need to waste any more herbs and effort on them when other cats are suffering worse.
As if reading their mind, it seems to be the first matter that Sablestar brings to attention in this meeting, and Crowpaw stares down at their paws in an attempt to mask the worry they feel. They know Magpiepaw is capable enough to handle the worst-case scenario, but it would still be a devastating blow for ShadowClan to be knocked down to only one medicine cat within its ranks just when all the herbs are dying out from the cold.

The next piece of news comes as a surprise to Crowpaw, and his head snaps upward as Sablestar's words ring out through the clearing. Is demoting Wolfpack really the best choice? With the way Sablestar speaks of him, maybe it is, though he gets the feeling that his reasoning is more so because they had a personal falling out than Wolfpack actually failing to perform up to standards. But what does he know? And what difference would it really make in the long run? The only real question now is who the new deputy in Wolfpack's place will be.

Crowpaw would normally be the first to jump on the opportunity to bend or even break the rules if it meant it would benefit the Clan somehow (or, admittedly, just himself). But choosing to make the kits apprentices two moons early feels... wrong, somehow. Silvery eyes focus on them, their faces still covered with kitten-fuzz. Even Sablestar himself mentions how they've only recently begun eating full meals of solid food - his 'ma had hardly let him wander a fox-length away from her when he was their age... Desperate times and desperate measures, I guess.
At least Amethystkit - Amethystpaw now, Crowpaw supposes - is the proper age to be leaving the nursery. The faintest traces of a smile appear on her face as she sees how excited he is, despite how annoying it must be to see the younger cats be apprenticed alongside him. She sneaks over to him as Sablestar continues on, nudging his shoulder lightly.
"Hey, congrats," she whispers to him. "We should train together sometime, I'll show you some cool fightin' moves."

Mirepurr is not alone as they witness Sablestar's fury, but they don't find it in themself to be grateful. Their Clanmates' presence offers relief, yes, but the pair of eyes they had spotted within the shadows quell that within an instant. Their back is turned in the hopes of blocking out Coalstrike, though it only serves to unnerve them further—what if he encroaches upon them, startle them out of their skin, thus making a fool of themself at a meeting? Surely Coalstrike would not humor such kittish antics.

Their head is bowed as they listen. Cicadabuzz's fate is nothing new; they had seen the state of ShadowClan's medicine cat. Mirepurr had not known what would unfold in the wake of it, of course, but... somehow, this feels natural. A natural consequence. How Magpiepaw will fare without a mentor is something else entirely—but Mirepurr knows precious little about the world of healing. They do not wish to underestimate little Magpiepaw. Wolfpack's sudden and cold demotion is what makes their ears perk in surprise; if the leader and deputy had public disagreements, they had been entirely lost on Mirepurr.

There is no successor. Sablestar doesn't name one, and he sidesteps the matter with good news.

Perhaps they don't need one. It's not Sablestar's fault that the pocosin is suddenly unwelcoming with its prey scarcity... he will surely lead them out of this mess, in time. Though Mirepurr naively wishes for a lack of future trespassing in order to achieve it.

Mirepurr's voice only emerges when it's time to celebrate the new apprentices. Their tail curls in satisfaction; this is a good sign. These 'paws are eager to make their mark on the world and prove themselves to ShadowClan. Every single one of them will be needed in the near future.

Sablestar continues, and it takes Mirepurr an embarrassingly long time to realize that yes, he had indeed just called their name. Grouped it together with Bluegale, in fact, and called them both night guards. Bluegale certainly deserves it—but them? Is this a joke? Blue eyes widen in shock as they await laughter, dismissal, anything that would finally reveal that Sablestar had not actually meant his words.

But he did.

Something cold seeps into their bones, and Mirepurr doubts that the wind had turned coincidentally colder. No, this comes from somewhere deep within... perhaps it's their heart that twists with anxiety. The situation feels impossible. They have been caring for ShadowClan since its creation, but... to serve within the council itself? To technically be one step higher than regular warriors when they have no achievement of their own to back it up? To make it make sense?

There is no way they can deny this. It would be wholly inappropriate- disrespectful.

And so, when Bluegale miraculously saves them from having to speak first, Mirepurr latches onto his last words.
"...likewise,"
is all they manage to say.

BLACKTREE
Damn your love, damn your lies
Blacktree was a bit surprised that more kits besides Amethyst were being apprenticed, but it made sense. They needed all the paws they could to help with hunting, and with Timberfrost finally recovering, they might be able to focus on the nursing and weaning and ensure that the younger kits could make the most of their time in the nursery.

And no doubt Amethystkit would be jealous. Nevertheless, Blacktree gave the young cat an encouraging lick on his forehead.

"Congratulations, Amethystpaw," she mewed softly. "You're going to do amazing."

Blacktree watched with pride, an ache in her heart despite the surge of affection. Her gaze flicked to Dunehusk as she wondered-

Would she one day have a litter stand as these kits did? Kits of her and Dunehusk, ready to take their place as true members of the Clan?
