Heavy pawsteps echoed on the wind as she ran, bloody pawsteps the only evidence marking the places she's been and the sins she's commited. The world around her blurred as tears of pain and anger filled her eyes; the clouds ovehead mirroring her, for they, too, broke into sobs. Rain mixed with snow and hail fell sharp on her coat, cutting her skin open in places where the ice grazed against her. Yet she winced not, for all the pain she carried in her heart was starting to become overshadowed by the anger.

How could she have been so stupid? She wanted to help and instead, she got herself into a mess. Sharp claws slashed at the ground in frustration as she tried to block the guilt from arising, but it was too strong, overwhelming even her most valiant efforts at pushing it down. She had led them right to her family.

Now she was all alone, running away from the mess she'd caused, but unable to escape it. Blood dripped into her eye from a wound that, if she was to survive, would be a constant reminder of her failure. As a daughter, as a sister, as a friend. As a member of a community. I'm no one's problem now, she thought bitterly as an image flashed in her mind of the cats she's grown up around, laying in pools of blood, fur scraps everywhere and a hungry, bloodthirsty growl behind her. She had led it to them and she was the sole survivor, destined to bear the weight of countless lives on her shoulders.

The growl was no longer following behind her and the adrenaline was starting to wear off, reminding her of how long she's ran for. Her vision blurred even more, not just from the rain and tears and blood oozing over her eyes, but from exhaustion as well, tugging at her consciousness, pulling her down. Her legs trembled and she laid her body down before she could collapse, not wanting the exhaustion to claim her first. It was just one simple thing, but if she could control it, she would seize the opportunity before the decision was made for her. The embodiment of defiance and spite.

At last, she let herself rest. But as her eyelids started to grow too heavy, a silhouette appeared in the rain, moving closer. She was too weak to get up, but she would not go down without a fight - not after all she's just survived! Her fur bristled on instinct, anger reflecting in her eyes as she unsheathed her claws and hissed at the stranger, "Don't you dare take another step closer!"

Adder stared out into the rain, back pressed against the shelter of the wharf, while he listened to droplets drum against the rotten planks. He'd been waiting a while now, the storm confining him to the prison of its choosing. At first, he hadn't noticed the smear of shadow creeping along the beach with how well the rain masked it. When he did, he sat up, watching it with narrowed eyes.

He could've let it be, but it was restlessness that dragged him into the storm. He never liked letting his paws sit idle, but lately all he had was time. There was no one to take care of but himself now that he'd been casted out. The territory he patrolled didn't offer much other than nostalgia. If he didn't keep himself busy, then his thoughts filled that space instead, and he would rather weather the cold than the ache in his chest.

He trailed after the figure, claws unsheathed and dragging lines in the sand. The rain pelted down, plastering fur to his frame. The shape he saw turned out to be smaller than he anticipated, and when he got closer, he stiffened. Hissing back at him was a kit, soaked to the bone and trembling. She glared up at him, blood trailing down her face from a deep gash above one eye.

Adder stared back at her wearily. She spat at him like she had any chance of stopping anything that meant real harm. A pitiful sight, but he admired the fire flickering in her eyes.

"Alright, alright..." Gravel rattled in his throat, stripped from the seasalt air. He didn't sheath his claws, but he did keep his distance. Usually, he would've run them off without a second thought, but she was young and already looked down on her luck.

"You're in no shape to fight, so you can put those away." No matter how small she was, he knew better than to test a cornered animal. "If you do, I'd be inclined to do the same." He took another step back, studying her down his muzzle, rain trickling down his face in streams, pooling beneath his chin.

She clearly wanted to be left alone, and he had the mind to leave her be. Movement caught his eye, and he lifted his head. Standing a ways off waited the pale shape of his mate, or at least the version of her that haunted him, watching with a smile. Did she think him cruel, flashing his claws at a kit? Or maybe weak for allowing himself to hesitate. Whatever she thought of him, Wave hadn't been keen on sharing since the day he gave Shellkit to the sea. Adder would've liked to hear her again, even if it was only to shower him with more cruelties.

He frowned and turned his head to scan the beach behind the snarling kit. "Were you running from somethin'?" Whether he left her or not, if there was a bigger threat in the shipyard, he needed to know.

The silhouette took form as it stepped out of the haze, revealing a cat - scarred and torn and battered. Hardened by battles fought. She knew she had no chance against an opponent like this, even in her best shape, and especially not now when her limbs barely obeyed her and her lungs stung with every inhale.

The other spoke with a rough voice and she could do nothing but glare at him with her teeth bared - but her body would not let her get up and fight. And so she obeyed - begrudgingly, unhappily, all she wished was to scratch the tom in the face and get him to leave. But she was in no shape to make demands like that. Slowly, she relaxed her paws, retracting her claws, though anger still burned behind her eyes as she stared daggers into the other. If he made all but one wrong step, she would make him regret it - even if it meant her end, she would not let him get away without harm.

She could hear the worry in his voice for whatever it was that was following her. What did he think of her? "It's long gone, if that's what you're wondering." The words were spat out at the tom's face, sharp like the hail grazing against her fur. "I'm not stupid enough to stop running when I'm still being chased."

She made no effort to move and neither did he. "So what, are you just gonna gawk at me?" she hissed at the brown tom annoyed. "Either get me to my paws or fuck off."

The bags under his eyes should've been enough to hint at how much patience he had these days, not that he ever had much to begin with. But he stood there, wind licking at his exposed teeth, letting the rain pelt him in the face while she thought better of wasting the last of her energy on a fight with no chance of winning. Stubborn thing, couldn't have been more than a few moons old. Too young to be out there on her own, but he had enough self-preservation not to ask right off the boat, because for all he knew, she didn't have any. If he was going to pry any information out of her, it'd have to wait until they were out of the storm.

"A brat with common sense, that's rare." The tom muttered under his breath. At least he knew there was nothing still tailing her, but that was no reason to get complacent. She might've escaped, but he doubted a kit her age could run far. Whatever was after her could still be lurking in the shipyard. Adder supposed that would have to be a problem for later. The storm would harbor them until then.

When she hissed at him again, he didn't flinch. Though her colorful choice of words sure surprised him. She had one hell of a bark, that was for sure. That wasn't an awful thing to have as long as she had the bite to match. She might, in a few moons, when her head wasn't the size of one of his paws. If she ran into another cat tonight, there was a chance she could've been in trouble. Plenty of cats worse than him out there that would kill for less.

Well, he could hardly judge her for brandishing a silver tongue when he had one himself. "Fine." Adder sighed, breath coiling in the air as he stepped closer. He hesitates a second longer, a single yellowed tooth clasps against his lip, slitted eyes finding hers. "Draw any blood and I might trip and throw you into the sea on accident, got it?" Leaving her with that warning, he bent down and grabbed her by the scruff. Truth be told, he expected the fiesty kit to lash out at him anyway, but even if she did, he wasn't letting go. She weighed nothing, hardly more than a fish. He turned, shoulders braced against the storm, and hauled her back toward the wharf.

Without having to worry about her following him, the trip was quick. He crossed the beach and ducked back into the shelter, dropping her as soon as the rain let up off his head.

It was humiliating enough to not be able to defend herself, but to completely rely on the tom to carry her to safety? She was only glad he would drop her off and leave her alone after that. What use would a rogue cat have for someone like her?

But as the rain stopped showering her pelt, the tom did not move. Instead he stayed, watching her with calculating eyes. Well, two could play that game. She glared at him with a wild look in her eyes, sizing him up and down - he was big, sure, but not the biggest she's seen, and he was thin. Not that she was doing much better, but she could barely scavenge for food with her age - he was an adult. He could hunt, and yet his frame was way too lean for someone as tall as he.

"You're quite ugly, you know that?" she remarked as she stared at his face. His ears were all scratched up and torn, a scar ran across his face, exposing teeth. She's seen worse, of course, but she's seen better, a lot better actually, as well.

Without waiting for an answer, she raised her head and started cleaning her wounds, all the little scrapes on her pelt. The physical ones, she could fix. The others, well... she would not dwell on those. All the pain she transformed into rage, ready to unleash it on anyone who dared come too close. If it was this stranger or next, it did not matter. Someone would eventually meet her wrath.
