Meetings are still a new phenomenon to Frostmoth. What had once been occasional rendezvous among fellow dwellers of the shipyard has morphed into an organized event. A call for a gathering regardless of interest, announcements, and a lot of pomp and circumstance. Where he might have once hung back and chosen to eavesdrop instead, Frostmoth is now at the forefront alongside Pikestar. One of his many duties; to be aware of all things.

And alongside this too now, there is a council for he and Pikestar to preside over and work with. Such a group of cats has been called forth now for a more intimate meeting. A gathering of council members. Pikestar had been the one to suggest this, and Frostmoth is the first to poke inside of the leader's den. He feels his fur prickle with discomfort, but still sits neatly with his fluffy tail tucked over his paws.

He tries to face the council meeting ahead with a sense of enthusiasm, and as the others file in he offers them nods and quiet niceties. He asks them how their patrols have turned out, how prey has been, and how their families are. It's small talk. Frostmoth still hasn't mastered it, but he tries his best anyhow.

After a swell of awkwardness, Frostmoth clears his throat when he thinks he sees Pikestar make his way inside. "Ah, right. So... There is a bit for us to discuss," he begins, uncomfortable as usual "Pikestar wants us to figure out which apprentices and mentors should be paired together. Preferably they should have good synergy. Of course, they don't have to be similar, they just have to be able to work together."

After a brief, thoughtful moment he gestures towards Adderfang and suggests: "For example, if Adderfang in amenable to it, I think he should be paired with Mistpaw. They work well together from what I've seen."

Pineheart slips into the den, immediately feeling… cramped. Too many cats in too small a space, for his taste. But for a meeting such as this, he supposes it's appropriate. He's careful to stay hunched, to not knock into any of Pikestar's many trinkets or the roof of the den.

Settling in across from Frostmoth, he waits. When they've all gathered, Frostmoth speaks, and he listens, ears twitching. Mentorship… Well, he's already been mentoring Torrent, although he hadn't given it much thought. But that would be one apprentice squared away. And perhaps… a very small part of him… did not want anyone else to mentor Torrentpaw.

"I'll take on Torrentpaw as my apprentice," Pineheart says, "I've already been teaching him things since we met in the shipyard." He pauses, thinking. "Perhaps it would be a good idea to pair drypaws with drypaws? And good divers with good divers, and so on? So that everyone can play to their strengths and develop them."

Lately, the future had been weighing on his mind more than he ever thought it would. More specifically, the future of the clan and its young. Once, ensuring the survival of his kits would've been a burden shared between him and Wave alone. While it was no longer necessary, that didn't mean he would hand off his kits' training to just anyone.

It had taken time to warm up to the idea, but now he believed it would be good for them. No, he thought it necessary even now that him and Wavesong had additional duties. Even so, Adderfang had expectations—clear ones—about how his kits should be trained, and he fully intended to make that known to whoever took on the responsibility.

Adderfang sat straight, silent and impassive unless spoken to. His sharp amber eyes moved slowly from one cat to the next as they talked among themselves. It struck him that this was the first time they'd all sat together like this. Whether he was prepared or not, he was here—and ready to speak his mind.

When Frostmoth began, Adderfang's ears twitched at the sound of his name. He waited, giving Pineheart room to speak, before saying his piece. "I agree and have many thoughts on the other pairings," He began, "But to add to that—Frostmoth—I would gladly take Mistpaw." Adderfang saw a lot of himself in the way Mistpaw carried themselves. Maybe that was why he felt such an affinity towards them, and why he wanted to be the one who oversaw their training. There wasn't a doubt in his mind that they could be a strong asset to the clan.

His gaze landed on Pikestar. "And If it's still possible, I'd also like to mentor Rosepaw." No need to mention that he'd already brought it up with Pikestar before. It should be no surprise to the silver tom, but he asked again just to be certain that he was okay with it.

"We have a lot of young in need of mentors, and I know I'm capable of managin' more than one." After being abandoned by her family and then losing a friend, Rosepaw needed stability. Now, that didn't mean others weren't capable… but perhaps he was being a little selfish too. Unlike with Rush and Crescentpaw, he hadn't gotten to spend as much time with her, and from what Wavesong told him, Rosepaw's family hadn't been that attentive in the first place.

A council meeting, and their first one. Shes settled in to her role of newfound authority quite happily, but its a lack of experience in a group setting that leads her to be a bit attitude-y, tail flicking back and forth in idle motion as she waits for everyone to gather around. Frostmoths first suggestion is Adderfang with Mistpaw. "No objections." she mews passively. She doesn't know very well of the apprentices, and Mistpaw is always elusive, a ghost, passerby. Pigeonpearl doesn't care much for them.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to pair drypaws with drypaws, and Pigeonpearl mutters an inaudible, "Or maybe with swimmers," they don't need more drypaws... Riverclans whole thing was water. "Anyone can learn anything. I don't think we have much options at paw here." she shrugs at Pineheart. These apprentices could take what they get, with how many they have. Its similar to Frostmoths first sentiment, of course, they don't have to be similar, they just have to be able to work together. She exhales as its time for her to speak now.

"... I can take one. Or two." her teeth snap together, eyes narrowing. And I know I'm capable of managin' more than one, and thats the whole reason Pigeonpearl chimes in with taking more. It's hard not to view the other Life Guards as a competition rather than a working unit. With her desperation to prove herself, she clings to all she can take with a claw-gripped hold. "N' they'll be good warriors, too. I'll make sure of it." the way Pigeon says it sounds more like a threat than anything, but she'd never take her training to the extreme. Or maybe she would...? All depends on how willing they are to listen. "How about I take Sharkpaw?" cocky, brash, and... quite frankly, Pigeonpearl finds him annoying... But someone stern, and not to stroke her own ego's flare, and someone who expects nothing less than perfection would be good for him. But thats really all she has to say on the matter, her mouth snapping shut, eyes expectantly on her fellow council members.

JINGLEMOON, 25 Moons, RiverClan Medicine Cat // He/They // #3b90ff
A long furred blue tabby tom with low white, long pointed ears with curved tips and dazzling blue eyes.
Sibling to ASTRO, Uncle to TWINKLEPAW, ECLIPSEPAW and COMETPAW
Always walks with a jingle in his step! Good listener and ever curious about the world.
Played by DINGO

Jinglemoon dips his head to Frostmoth as he slips into Pikestars' den behind some of the others, taking up a spot next to Pigeonpearl he'd neatly tuck his tail over his paws as he settled down and waited for the rest of the cats called upon to arrive.

Ears perking to attention when the deputy clears his throat Jinglemoon would listen in first, the first topic at paw was the matter of figuring out which apprentices and mentors should be paired together. The medicine cat shuffled his paws quietly as he listened to what Pineheart, Adderfang and Pigeonpearl had to say first, two things were on his mind all the while. Should... He take on an apprentice too? and who would be the best mentor for his niece, Twinklepaw? He had promised her father that he'd look out for her and as her uncle he wanted to see her be paired with a mentor who would nurture her spirit while also keeping her safe. As for being a mentor himself as the clans' medicine cat he was unsure if any young cat would even be interested, herbs weren't nearly as interesting as hunting or battle training to most cats, what if he took on an apprentice and they didn't like the position? It was a rather lonely job being the sole medicine cat though too and an extra set of paws would be a great help.

"I think Twinklepaw would learn well under maybe Wavesong or Peachtrot-- If either is up for it of course! She's fairly confident in the water and is good at crafting things with her paws too" He remembered back to when they had first arrived in their new home, one of the first things Twinkle had wanted to do was create, he thought Pikestar or even Frostmoth would be good mentors for her as well but given their already demanding responsibilities he didn't feel it was his place to suggest them. Pineheart would take on Torrentpaw and suggested pairing mentors and apprentices who could play to each others strengths as well, Adderfang would take on both Rosepaw and Mistpaw-- Given how many young cats they had in the clan and kits nearing apprentice ages already too, some mentors would likely have to take on pairs. Pigeonpearl suggested she take on Sharkpaw, he had no objections so far as these were all very capable cats and if they felt they could train the apprentices they had named then he believed in their ability to do so.

"Should I also take on an apprentice then? A medicine cat apprentice?"

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

Russetfall silently slinks in after Jinglemoon like a red shadow, fur prickling with unease. She was never good at one-on-one conversations. Group conversations even less so. A soft huff of acknowledgement leaves her maw towards her fellow council members before she tucks in her limbs and curls her tail around herself.

Frostmoth speaks, and she listens. Green eyes narrow in thought at the mention of pairing drypaws with drypaws and so on. There certainly wasn't any specific harm in it per se, but was it... Wise? She wasn't sure. Pigeonpearl mumbles something that she thinks is in protest of it and Russet finds herself nodding slowly.

"At the very least," She starts slowly, thoughtful. "The drypaws should know how to swim- and be able swim well. We get a lot of rain here, and that can make the currents stronger... If the worst were to happen I'd want to be assured they won't drown."

It's a bit of a morbid thought, but Russetfall had never been one to beat around the bush, really. Her ears flick in Jinglemoon's direction at his question. Stars forbid anything happen to the tom, but it was certainly a good idea. Cover all their bases... That was the whole reason Frostmoth was named deputy after all, right? In case something happened to Pikestar and he lost all his supposed nine lives?

"I think it'd be good for you to take on an apprentice, Jinglemoon. I dunno if any of the apprentices have taken an interest in what you do but it definitely wouldn't hurt in case..." She trails off, uncertain of whether to voice the issue or not. In case he died? Got sick? She'd formed some sort of...camaraderie with him in the moon she was confined to his den. She found it was not something she wanted to think about.

"A-anyways, I don't have any particular preference who I take as my apprentice, but rest assured I'll make sure they're a strong swimmer." Back to the topic at paw, rather than dwell on the worst...

Let's play like we're children and sing till the moons full

Before the day we turn to nothing but sand

When the council had been asked to get together for their own private meeting, Peachtrot was elated. Despite being handpicked by Pikestar a few moons prior, they had not properly gotten together all at once ‐ a tragedy in the molly's eyes. While they all took part in their duties and made sure to keep the clan on track, they had never really had a serious conversation about the ongoings of their clanmates. Even she had fallen into a rhythm unlike usual, making herself slightly distance. And that just wouldn't do in Peachtrot's eyes!

Stepping into the den with her usual amount of energy, she had greeted each member with a bright smile, settling closer to the entrance seeing as she was one of the last ones to arrive. Admittedly, she had lost track of time while weaving flowers together, but when she saw some of the council pass by on the way to the leader's willow, the molly made sure to tuck her projects back into her nest – she didnt want to ruin the surprise, afterall – before she followed after them. Happily joining in on the small talk that Frostmoth offered (who doesn't like knowing how their fellow clanmates were doing?), Peachtrot's attention was soon guided to the subject at hand: Apprentice Pairings. There were quite a few young cats in need of guidance and training and, for once, the red tabby made sure to allow her other council members to speak, despite the want to jump in at every moment and word that passed between the others.

It was when her name dropped from Jinglemoon's maw that she perked up, looking towards their medicine cat with bright ocean eyes. "I would be happy to take little Twinkle under my paw! I've seen how creative she can be with all the treasures that the river has to offer and I'd love to show her all the different ways she can use them!" The slightest tilt of her head was given as she contemplated the idea of taking on a second apprentice like so many of the others offered. Maybe it would be best, seeing as the others were offering their paw in double dipping as well. With a determined nod, she continued, "If we need it, I'd be willing to take on a second apprentice as well. Maybe..." A pause, her gaze looking up at the den ceiling for only a second before it was brought back down, landing on the gruff father of two across from her. "Adderfang, I think Crescentpaw would be a good match to go with Twinkle and me, if that's okay with you!" Of course, they may not all need to double up. There were still more pairings to be a made, after all! And one in particular that may need more guidance...

"I think you should give it time, Jingle-Mingle! Im sure there's at least one guppy that would be interested in your herbs. Have you thought about putting on a show and tell for the camp? Maybe if they get to see what you do, they'll be more curious~!" Afterall, the rest of the clan didn't get the chance to see how well the medicine cat could deal with injuries and how many cool things you could learn about different herbs and plants. As for the rest of the clanmates who could take someone under their paw... "I think the ones afraid of the water should at least be paired with warriors who have patience. Like Wavesong, Willowburn, or even you, Frostmoth!" The last thing they wanted was for the dry-paws to have even more trouble getting over their fear and having someone who would throw them in the river without a thought for said fears. And she could picture quite a few of their clanmates who would do just that.

Pineheart listens, thoughtful, as everyone else voices their opinions. He has to swallow an exasperated sigh, though, at the mention of taking on more than one apprentice, of the… eagerness, of youth. He's forgotten how young they all are. Even Adderfang is only about 30 moons, though he is wise beyond his years for the most part. And Adderfang– well, he at least has more experience to draw from, and would perhaps be capable of training two apprentices at once. But the rest? He's doubtful. They seem overeager. They want to prove themselves, but to whom, Pineheart isn't sure.

At length, he speaks again. "Of course, everyone should know how to swim. But I don't see a point in forcing cats who hate water to swim in it constantly, or learning to dive, and the like. We don't have many drypaws to begin with, and I think a few good enthusiastic divers would be better than a horde of cats who despise it. But if you all think it best, then I'll concede." He looks over at Jinglemoon. "I also think it would be wise for you to take an apprentice, Jingle. You won't be around forever."

He looks around at them all now, weighing his words, before finally, "I do not want more than one apprentice. And while I won't stop anyone from taking on more than one, I will say I think it is unwise. Your focus will be split. You will not be able to personalize the training to each apprentice– one may already excel at hunting and another be poor at it, one may learn quick and another slow. Unless you plan on only taking out one at a time? That would extend the length of their training. If you plan to teach both at once, then think long and hard about whether you will be able to give both apprentices the time and attention required," he draws himself a little higher, ears brushing against the roof of the den. "I am not questioning your capabilities as warriors. I know you were all chosen by Pikestar for good reason. I say this only for the sake of the kits you will teach– do not take on more than one only to prove something, for your own gain. Unless you plan to teach selfishness as well as hunting."
