Somehow, Frostmoth has been roped into helping with den repairs. Although this is a necessary task that has been added onto their daily schedules- it had only been a few days ago that the ceiling had caved in and doused poor Adderfang and his nest in rainwater- Frostmoth is lacking in deftness. Beside him, Russetfall is also assisting in the weaving and patching of reeds; likely to her chagrin.

Frostmoth isn't close with the lifeguard, even though both of them were the exact same age. And it feels a bit strange to try and bridge that gap now that Frostmoth (by some miracle) outranks her. If anything, the deputy thinks perhaps they should change places. He wonders if Russetfall ever feels the same lack of experience and training that he does. But he knows better than to pry. If anything, she must be better prepared than him: she had been assigned an apprentice and he had been left to figure out his own nonsense instead.

Ironic.

"Do you know how this works?" The deputy finally speaks, finding himself frustrated enough that he no longer cares that the silence between them is thick and awkward. "I feel like this is something I could have learned as an apprentice," he adds with a huff, spreading his front paws over the dried reeds in front of him "But I narrowly escaped that age window. So unfortunately... This is a skill that I lack."

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

She did not expect to be pulled aside for this chore, but she supposed she'd been forced to watched Peachtrot do it enough times when she was helping Jinglemoon set up the medicine den that she at least had a better idea of how to do it than Frostmoth. Its easy to get into a groove with the motions, and that leaves her mind wandering. Making one's own den from scratch (or as close to scratch as possible) was a foreign concept to her. She'd lived in twolegplace before the shipyard, there were plenty of boxes and nooks and crannies one could make their own if you knew where to look-or kick another cat out if you had the muscle...

Russetfall is so lost in her memories that she startles when the deputy speaks.
"Wh- Oh!" She blinks, staring up at her handiwork before glancing to the other. "Peachtrot was in and out of here a lot when I was staying with Jingle, suppose I just watched her enough to get the vague idea of it."

The warrior shrugs, rolling her shoulders before shaking her head. "I doubt anyone knew this before we came here. Except Peachy, apparently since this was all her idea. ..I was born in twolegplace, we didn't really make our own dens or anything like that there. No one taught me anything like this." She muses before shrugging once more and leaning forward with a toothy smile. "We'll figure it out, no one is good at hunting their first try. ...Or maybe we'll be lucky and Twinklepaw will teach all the other apprentices this when she learns it from Peach."

Oh, one could dream.

Frostmoth supposes that he's never really had to perform this task. When he'd been a kit, he and his family had all lived as cats on a fishing boat, and once they'd moved on to living in the shipyard there had been bountiful shelter. Whether it were the dock, a rocky overhang, or the shed that they had all found themselves in the fateful night of the storm that had all brought them together. And it wasn't like he had settled into clan life for very long either before he'd been thrust into his duties as deputy. Frostmoth had just never learned this particular skill. And so, foolishly, when he had volunteered to help out, he was like a proverbial fish out of water. But Russetfall makes it look simple enough.

Frostmoth feels sheepish when he realizes that he's startled the lifeguard. He nods quietly. "I suppose when you have to watch someone do it enough then you can eventually pick it up yourself," he agrees lightly. Frostmoth does not mention that Russetfall is the exact opposite of the cat he imagines when he thinks of a cat who is crafty. He finds himself surprised when Russetfall mentions that she's from twolegplace; it's a detail about his clanmate that he hadn't known. "I was the same way," Frostmoth comments "Me and Stormswirl, we used to be boat cats. Like twoleg nests but... Ships and boats instead." He laughs a little and then adds "I suppose that's why my survival skills aren't the sharpest."

Russetfall, in a moment of transient warmth, reassures him that they'll figure it out, and Frostmoth returns her grin. "I'd like to think I've always been a good hunter," he says sarcastically, leaning back a little "And it would be nice to have the apprentices teach each other their skills. I'm young enough that sometimes I feel like one of them compared to cats like Pineheart and Adderfang."
