Russetfall... Even though she carried herself as unfazed towards the others, he knew better. She was worried and perhaps blamed herself. Nudging Iciclepaw along was her way of escaping from the group, to collect her thoughts. Truth be told he was going to seek her out much sooner, but Jinglemoon and Wavesong were restless. They refused to let him out of sight, even though he was more than fine. All that remained were the scars that Adderfang had left him along with the ache of his joints. However, he was grateful for their concern. Their presence soothed him slightly as the image of Adderfang's raised bloodied claw before it struck kept replaying over and over again. When he trembled they asked if he was in pain, but he would shake his head. Oh, how it crushed him to see Wavesong's guilt ridden face. As for Jinglemoon? The sorrow haunted him.

Pikestar attempted to sleep, but he kept waking up in a panic. The events that transpired at the gathering refused to settle for the night. It was going so well at first too. He could remember the Thunderclan apprentice approaching him and how the two chatted. Then, he recalled Dustystar appearing and the two having a pleasant chat. Oh, everything was going well. He even chatted with Juniperstar for a bit about hosting some event between both their clans, before a bloodied Skyclan arrived. Was that a sign? Was I supposed to leave with Riverclan? After that... That's when I spoke with that Shadowclanner. The conversation with Coalstrike hadn't been a friendly one, and yet Adderfang decided to shove him away. From there... Everything went wrong. No matter what answer he gave the former Riverclan life guard, Adderfang was unsatisfied. It was the lack of satisfaction and fierce love that drove Adderfang to do what he did.

I can't stop thinking about him being so... So ruthless. We used to be friends. I think. He taught me how to fight moons ago. He wouldn't have done that if he didn't care a little, and if he didn't think we were friends. We even laughed together sometimes, so why? Why did he seem so okay? With doing that to me? Or was I wrong? Like always. Always making mistakes.

There was no use in trying to sleep again when he kept seeing Adderfang as soon as he closed his eyes. With a sigh he raises to his paws and begins to leave the medicine cat den. Before he leaves, he gives a final glance towards Jinglemoon and Wavesong sleeping soundly.

His first order of business was to find Russetfall. The first stop was the warriors den. Most warriors are resting in their nests while others glance towards him for only a moment before returning their attention to the exit of the den. The events from earlier are weighing on their minds without a doubt. He wishes to soothe them, but it would fall on deaf ears. They were processing what transpired and all he could do was wait. Unfortunately, the she-cat he was looking for was nowhere to be found. Without a word he leaves the warriors den and heads to his own. Guess I should clean a little to tire myself out. Maybe then I'll fall asleep.

What greets him is Russetfall lingering close to his nest.
"Oh. You're here?"
She looks awful, but he so does he.
"Can't sleep either?"
The answer is obvious. She had even said so earlier, when she departed with Iciclepaw. The very apprentice who called him a father before his first death. Was he a bad father? For not seeing his child as soon as he could? Thinking of such things would only worsen his mood. What do I need to think of now. Green eyes linger on the she-cat in front of him. Her. Duh. But what should I say?

"I didn't mean to make you worry."
Okay. Not the way he wanted to start off, but it was already out there. How can I save this?
"Sorry. No. Actually I'm not. Sorry. I know you care. Deep down, even if you try to hide it."
Evidently, the lack of sleep and the whole ordeal of the gathering was taking a toll on his decision making. If he actually slept a little, he would've been a little wiser when conversing with her.
"It's not like I didn't want to tell you about my nine... Eight lives. There were more important things to do and the council was a mess. I just thought it wasn't the right time to bring it up. Of course, learning by Adderfang's... Actions wasn't the best I'll admit."
He was rambling wasn't he?

A silver paw rubs against his neck, one now bearing claw marks.
"You shouldn't blame yourself. You did everything you could. If it wasn't for you, I would've been an idiot. Talking to Adder I mean. And... I'm still here, so it's not too bad."

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

The moment Iciclepaw had fallen asleep Russetfall had wriggled herself out of the nest for some fresh air, careful not to wake the apprentice or she'd have to try to get him to sleep again and undoubtedly it'd be harder to do the second time around. She felt like she couldn't get a full breath no matter what she did. Every glance, every faint brush of a clanmates fur against her own felt like a promise. A threat. Did they know that she had failed? That she'd been too late to stop what she'd seen the beginnings of? Of course they'd blame her for Pikestar's death if they ever found out. She may as well have been the one to slit his throat instead of Adder.

She needed to get out of here before they all knew. She needed...she needed to...

The chocolate life guard stopped suddenly at the entrance of the medicine den, paws rooted in place. The ever present frown on her face deepened as she dared to poke her head inside. Jinglemoon's den had a heavy air about it. If the camp was on edge then the medicine den was the very belly of the beast. It was oppressive, and in the midst of it all laid Pikestar with Wavesong nearby (something twisted in her chest at the thought of her and the kits learning the news) in her own nest.

...Maybe she could just leave without telling anyone..? Or... No. No that was stupid. It was stupid and pointless and since when had SHE ever cared?

She slips back into camp and straight to Pikestar's den like a shadow; a small shell, spiraled and striped all around, in her maw. A farewell gift, of sorts. All she had to do was leave it there among his trinkets and leave. Easy. Now all she had to do was slip away-

Oh. You're here?

Russetfall nearly jumps out of her own skin at Pikestar's voice, green eyes briefly widening with fear before she quickly composes herself as she turns to face him fully. Her tail deftly curls around the shell, hiding it from view. "...Yes. I came to check on you after..."

After you died.

The words refuse to come out and she trails off as the silver tom continues to speak. She did not care. Not in the slightest, but-

Why had her chest tightened like that when Adder threw himself at Pike? Why did Iciclepaw pressing against her sometimes spark some strange feeling of protectiveness for the boy?

"You should have said something sooner." There's a warbling in her voice that she's barely aware of, eyes darting from Pikestar to the entrance he's blocking as if she might need to make a break for it before he calls all of Riverclan down on her. "I'm sorry, I should have said something sooner-"

The apology tumbles out before she can stop herself. "At the council meeting during the argument, I saw Adder glance at your neck then, and I knew. I knew it could escalate to what happened tonight but I wasn't there. I should have been there to defend you. I failed you."

That was what she had offered to him, hadn't she? To protect him? Be his sword when needed and warn him of danger..? What good is a sword when absent? She knows the answer. She'd seen the answer before.

"...I understand...if you want me to leave."

How foolish she had been to believe that she could have done anything to change things.

If he hadn't been so exhausted, he would've noticed Russetfall's unusual demeanor. Perhaps it was for the best that his exhaustion failed to see what she was hiding from him. Anyhow, the news that she wanted to check up on him came off as normal.
"Ah, right."
It was awkward, but neither of them want to name it. Even if it was foolish to do so. However, it was just to much to think about. What he is grateful for is the fact that she isn't upset at his rambling.

"Yeah. I should've."
A lame response, but what more was there to say? Now it is his turn to listen to her.

At her admission he does not snarl at her. It is hard to tell exactly is going on within the leader's mind, as his expression remains tired. No time is given to answer. It's expected, Russetfall was not one to be vulnerable or desire to sit in the discomfort of emotions. The silver tabby can't help but sigh,
"What's with it with everyone thinking I want them to leave?"
Everyone was a bit of an overstatement considering Wavesong was the only other cat who was ready to be kicked out of the clan along with her kits for Adderfang's actions. Did they think he loathed all of them? Blamed them for this mess? Even though Russetfall could have told him this long ago, he can't help but feel like it was inevitable. Adderfang was going to do something to him eventually. After all, the pair had been at odds for moons. I would've thought he'd do something sooner.

While he didn't see it as her failing him, he understood. Yes, she actually did fail him. She promised to be his sword when needed and protect him from danger. And where was she? Nowhere to be found when Adderfang started hissing at him and unsheathing his claws. The sword that arrived in his time of need was not the one who promised. It was Coyoteclaw. By no means was Coyoteclaw a refined sword, considering she kept angering Adderfang further, but Pikestar can't say she didn't step up to defend him. No matter how poor the attempt. I have to thank her for that. She risked herself for me, even though she might've made things a bit worse too. For another time though, I can't let myself be distracted. The question was how he should go about this. He did not want to be brutal in saying yes, but he didn't want to brush it aside so easily. Russetfall would be less receptive if he simply said it was no big deal and it wasn't her fault.

"I'm not upset that you didn't tell me what you saw. What you knew, 'cause what happened at the gathering felt like it was coming for some time."
Russetfall wouldn't need any elaboration about how bad tensions were between the pair. Everyone in the clan started to dread when they were in close proximity.
"You failed me during the gathering by not being there for me. Coyoteclaw was the one who was there for me instead, but I don't blame you."
Green eyes meet.
"How could I?"
Silver paws languidly approach the chocolate she-cat until he is only a few pawsteps away from her.

"It was because of your advice I didn't look like a fool. I've been taking your words from that day to heart and I'm starting to see what you meant. How words have weight. I'm still figuring it out, but I'd like to think I've gotten just a little better at saying things."
He still didn't feel like a leader truth be told, but that night... Maybe for a moment he finally looked like a leader to the rest of them. If that was true... Then that was enough. It was a start. Hopefully of better times to come.
"Dustystar and I actually managed to have a decent conversation because of your lessons."
A jarring shift in conversation for sure. However, his maw moved before his mind could correct it. This was news he wanted to share with the council, but there is little use in trying to move along as if he never confessed something major.
"We've decided to learn more about each other while accepting that there might be a day we might meet in battle. Our clans are not allies, but we're not enemies either."

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

What's with everyone thinking I want them to leave?

Russetfall froze, confused. Had someone else needed to answer for this? Or believed they did? Who... Surely not Wavesong? She was innocent in all of this. She wasn't responsible for her mate's actions. As far as the molly was concerned the only ones to blame for what happened were herself and Adder. "But I failed you." She repeats dumbly, ears flat to her skull. Didn't he realize that? Surely that was all it took? In the past she'd seen cats cast out of the rogue gang for similar failures or even less. "I still should have done something, tried to talk Adder down, been more insistent on getting our herbs back- something." It was pointless to argue about what was already said and done, she knew, but still she felt as if she needed to explain. Maybe she was just trying to justify it all to herself.

Pikestar meets her gaze as he moves closer when he speaks and Russetfall stays where she is, body rigid. Bracing herself for the other to lash out despite knowing in the back of her mind that he would never even consider it. No blow comes. No claws or fangs tear into flesh. She's so dumbfounded it takes her a moment to register what's being said. "...I'm glad my advice helped, even a little. I want to see you succeed, Pike." Russet admits, the faintest bit of tension leaving her shoulders.

Learning the weight of his words, and eventually of his own presence, was something he would understand in time. Hopefully there would not be another event like at the gathering anytime soon for him to have to learn the hard way once again. But if there ever was then she would be ready with teeth bared and claws sharpened to a deadly point.

"Good," A slow smile appears on her face for a brief moment before the life guard shakes her head, suddenly exhausted. "It's a good start... Better than being enemies from the beginning, at least. I don't think we could ask for a better arrangement, at the moment."
