The rivers trickle was muffled beneath a thin sheet of ice, the surface glimmering in the night. He listened to it for a moment. A cold wind dragging its claws against his glossless, oil-stripped fur, whipping up the scents of fish and sea brine.

He crept along the bank, ears perked for pawsteps. Adder wanted to see his family again, more than anything, but they couldn't see him now. Adder hadn't felt right since sending Shellkit off. He heard things—saw things—dreamed things. It wasn't real, just his mind playin' tricks on him. Maybe he had just been spending too much time in the shipyard and it was drivin' him mad. Besdies, Adder knew that he looked rough. Wavesong told him to take care of himself, and he was trying, but there were days he just couldn't find the energy.

Though he'd gotten better at it since finding Rune. There were things she still couldn't do on her own. She still relied on him and Adder supposed he didn't completely mind. Having that brat around at least reminded him to eat and to go to bed on time. If he didn't, then she wouldn't, and he wasn't gonna be the one to teach her more bad habits. Whoever raised her before already taught her some colorful words, and that was bad enough.

All that and... there was something he needed to do. The river was his last stop and maybe his last visit for a while depending on how things went.

He glanced around before tipping the contents of a small bucket onto the bank. A few mice rolled out, along with several shells—smooth blues and creams, one curling into a strange little spiral. Rune complained the whole time they gathered them, but she helped him carry them from the shipyard anyway. Adder nudged them closer to the reeds, making a noticeable pile in the patchy grass across from a patrol path he remembered. Even stacked up, didn't look like much, but he hoped his family could make use of it. He was sure the offerings would be too tempting to throw away, at least.

The tabby was just about to turn back when a rustling caused him to freeze. Adder straightened, hackles bristling and amber eyes narrowing upstream.

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

She should be resting, she knew. Stars knew she wanted to but her mind would not slow down no matter what she seemed to do. Racing with thoughts of tomorrow's duties, how Russetfall needed to navigate her siblings (Why couldn't they have simply given her up as dead?) being amongst her clanmates now, she would need to talk to Iciclewish soon as well about what had happened when she collapsed... Too many thoughts and not enough space for them all.

So she walked to try and clear her head, tracing the river to the edge of the clan's territory. Her breath came out in foggy plumes with each step, though that was the extent of her acknowledgement of winter's chill for the most part. Green eyes narrowed as leaves rustled across the river, and she crouched. A familiar tom stepped out carrying a twoleg bucket in his teeth. Adder. What the hell was he doing here..? What was in the buck- oh. Oh.

He would be lucky if the morning patrol found his gifts before some scavenger did. ...Or she could at least take the mice now. The life guard pushes herself upright, paw purposely pressing against an unstable pebble stacked on top of another on the rocky shore with a clatter. She did not want to startle him too badly. She did not want to fight if she didn't need to. "Adder, wait," She mews, stepping fully into the open and onto the shore. She glances at the small cache of mice and shells for a long moment before looking up at the former life guard. "I'll let Wave know these came from you... She'll be happy to know you're-" Russetfall squints tiredly. He looked like he'd been washed away by the tide and come crawling back. "-Alive."

Had the shipyard become even more hostile since they'd all left? Or was he simply letting himself go? It was hard to tell. Perhaps it was both. She would not be surprised. Her tail curls around her paws as she sits. Relaxed despite the exhaustion pulling at her very being. She did not think Adder would attack her. It would be foolish to do so. He had been lucky to be allowed to leave with his life- to attack a riverclan cat now may as well be a death sentence. "...She's doing well, and the kits are getting bigger by the day." Aside from Shellkit, but she suspected that he already knew that.

If only that patrol she'd led to Shadowclan hadn't gone so terribly, maybe Shellkit needn't have died... And Adder wouldn't have sneak around like this and be able to see his kits and mate.
