Ivytwist hurried away from the border to wash the scent of fresh prey from his snout. It wasn't wrong to have a little snack between patrols, but he didn't want to set a poor example to any of the apprentices when he would be returning home without anything for those in camp. No matter how small it was.
But even as his heart hammered in his chest over it, the space between his ribs still felt light like a bird and ready to take off after meeting Heather. She was a kind face and... different, from the cats here. She wasn't one of them at all. A loner drifting with wherever the wind took her. So free from anything like borders and social etiquette. He hadn't had a life like that even before RiverClan, the shipyard wasn't a land of loners or rogues. They were all neighborly, many family, he had family.
Ivytwist had took to looking into his reflection while the water dripped down his whiskers and dotted the surface tension in ripples. I'm still me. He thought, staring into the shades of his eyes. The scars that split above his eye that he earned moons before the Clan's birth, the old pink tissue hardened and numbed. Another face appeared in the rippling water and he nearly jumped, relaxing when he turned his head.
"Oh, it's you." Ivytwist sounded relieved, pressing his nose into Hydrangeobloom's neck. "I've had the worst day today. I didn't catch a single thing... I didn't want to come home for everyone to see that." The tabby sighed as he sank further into his mate's fur.
